Accordion artist Maria Kalaniemi, together with jouhikko artist Pekko Käppi, created an exceptional artwork based on a Kalevala poem. What emerged was runo singing in Swedish, telling a story that depicts the inexplicable, emotion-stirring power of music. Tåreportens Pärla is a magical journey where powerful harmonies, delicate melodies and resounding church bells ring out together.
Maria Kalaniemi has, over a career spanning more than 40 years, renewed the perception of the accordion and the music played on it. She is characterised by sensitivity as a performing artist, as well as virtuosity. Solo appearances and ensemble tours have taken Maria Kalaniemi around the world – from Vienna’s concert halls and Tokyo’s festival halls to a manor hall in Espoo. In 2018 Kalaniemi was awarded the State Prize for Music and membership of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music.
