The Kokkolan Talviharmonikka festival was founded in 1999 and the first festival was called “Maalisharmonikka”. The festival had five concerts, which later formed the cornerstones of today’s festival: young virtuosos letting loose, a high-calibre foreign artist, a club gig, and collaboration with the Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra.  The festival was founded by its current artistic director Raimo Vertainen, whose unyielding perseverance and passion for music and culture has created this unique festival, which is especially important for the accordion.

Kokkolan Talviharmonikka seeks to employ especially local actors and businesses in the region, and to foster a “good us!” spirit by bringing people together in new and sometimes unconventional ways. Whether it is during a concert interval, on a ski trail, in a shopping centre, in schools or in a sauna in the middle of the city, our task as a festival is to create cultural experiences and togetherness for people through the power of music and the accordion after a long winter.
